The short answer: Poof gives every account 100 background removals a month for free, with no card on file, on the same endpoint and at the same full resolution as its paid plans, and paid plans start at $9 for 2,000 images. If you want to compare before you sign up, the rest of this guide covers eight more options.
"Free background removal API" usually means one of three things: a monthly allowance you can build on, a one-off bundle of trial credits, or a sandbox that watermarks the output. This guide sorts nine APIs into those buckets, lists what each free tier actually includes, and shows what you pay once you outgrow it. Every figure was checked on the provider's own site on 18 September 2026.

Which kind of "free" do you need?
A renewing monthly allowance is the only kind that works for a small production workload: a hobby project, an internal tool, or a low-volume feature you want to ship without a billing conversation. Poof (100 images a month) and Cloudinary (25 platform credits a month, shared with every other transformation you run) are the two on this list that renew.
One-off trial credits are for evaluation. ClipDrop's 100 credits, withoutBG's 50 credits (which expire after 30 days) and remove.bg's single trial credit tell you whether the model handles your images, and nothing more. Budget for a paid plan from day one.
A sandbox lets you build the integration for free but watermarks the output. Photoroom's 1,000 sandbox calls a month are generous for exactly that purpose, with 10 clean production calls to confirm the final result before you pay.
The nine APIs in detail
1. Poof
Every Poof account gets 100 credits a month with no card on file, at 4 requests a minute, on the same endpoint and with the same output as paid plans: a full-resolution transparent PNG (or WebP/JPG) in under two seconds. Paid plans start at $9 for 2,000 images and reach $0.002 per image on volume tiers. It is the option to pick if you want the free tier to turn into production without changing anything except the plan. Python and TypeScript SDKs, plus n8n, Zapier, Make and MCP integrations, are documented on the background removal API for developers page. The same 100 free credits also cover 20 seconds of video a month: see the video background remover API.
2. Photoroom
Photoroom's sandbox is the most generous evaluation tier on the list: 1,000 watermarked calls a month, plus 10 unwatermarked production calls per account. Once you go live, the Remove Background API costs $0.02 per image on the Basic plan, and calls to the broader Image Editing API (backgrounds, shadows, templates) cost $0.10 per image. Good if you want editing features beyond cut-outs; expensive if you only need the mask.
3. ClipDrop (now Jasper)
ClipDrop's remove-background API still gives new accounts 100 free credits "for development and debugging purposes", with a default limit of 60 requests a minute. ClipDrop is now part of Jasper and the public pricing page redirects to a contact form, so production pricing is a sales conversation rather than a number you can plan around.
4. withoutBG
A small, focused API with 50 free credits on sign-up that expire after 30 days. Paid packs start at €10 for 100 credits (€0.10 per image) and fall to €0.05 per image at volume. Straightforward, but 25–50× the per-image cost of Poof's volume plans.
5. remove.bg
The free tier is now a single trial credit, and the pricing page carries two dates that matter more than the price: credits expire on 1 December 2026, and the standalone remove.bg website is no longer available from that day. API pricing has already moved to a different service. If you are still on remove.bg, the free-tier question is moot; see the remove.bg alternative and migration guide.
6. Cloudinary
Cloudinary's free plan includes 25 credits a month across storage, bandwidth and transformations, with no card required. Background removal used to be a separately subscribed add-on; Cloudinary now says accounts created after 1 February 2026 cannot subscribe to it and should use transformation-based billing instead. Sensible if your images already live in Cloudinary, not a standalone background-removal API.
7. fal.ai (Bria RMBG 2.0)
fal hosts Bria's RMBG 2.0 model at $0.018 per image, pay-as-you-go, with no free tier listed on the model page. You get a strong open model with commercial licensing handled for you, but no monthly allowance and no free production calls.
8. Pixelcut
Pixelcut prices its API in credits: background removal is 5 credits per operation at $0.01 per credit, so $0.05 an image. The API page lists no free tier.
9. Replicate (open-source models)
Replicate runs open models such as rembg and BiRefNet on metered hardware: you pay per second, from $0.0001 on CPU to $0.000225 on a T4 GPU, with no free tier stated on the pricing page. The per-image cost depends on the model and cold starts, and you own the reliability and version pinning yourself. Cheapest at scale for teams that want to operate their own pipeline; not "free".

Get a free API key →What to check before you rely on a free tier
- Does the free output match the paid output? Watermarks, reduced resolution or a different model on the free tier mean you are not testing what you will ship.
- Does it renew? One-off credits are a trial, not a plan.
- What is the rate limit? A free tier at 4 requests a minute is fine for a queue worker and useless for a burst of 200 uploads.
- What happens to your images? Check whether uploads are stored, for how long, and whether they are used for training. Every provider's privacy policy should answer all three; Poof's does.
- Is the provider still going to exist? In 2026 this is not a rhetorical question.
How this comparison was made
I read each provider's public pricing or API documentation page on 18 September 2026 and recorded only figures stated there. Where a provider publishes no number (rate limits, card requirements, post-trial pricing) the table says so rather than guessing. Poof's figures come from its own plan definitions. If you spot a change, email support@poof.bg and I will update the table; the date at the top of this post reflects the last check.
